Services

Ambulatory
Vermont Large Animal Clinic has four equipped trucks to provide full service care for your horses in a field setting. Our comprehensive ambulatory services include primary care, preventative medicine and vaccinations, new foal wellness exams, lameness and pre-purchase examinations, reproductive services, and dental procedures. We also perform regular re-examinations of horses after discharge from our hospital so we can assure that patients are continuing with their progress. Diagnostically we have the ability to perform radiographic (X-ray), and ultrasonography examinations in the field when necessary.

Emergency
The veterinarians at Vermont Large Animal Clinic are available for emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We pride ourselves by providing our clients with extremely reliable emergency services. Including colic surgery, we are able to handle most cases either at your farm or at our hospital facilities. To reach a veterinarian for an emergency, just call our office phone number (802) 893-6800 during working hours or the emergency answering service (802) 860-8266 after-hours and they will page us.

Laboratory
We offer extensive laboratory services at our clinic, which allows for immediate evaluation of a patient's treatment needs. We offer the following:

  • Hematology - The complete blood count (CBC) is the most commonly performed basic hematology technique. This procedure provides the veterinarian with a red cell mass, white cell number, platelet estimate, and total protein.
  • Chemistries - A serum chemistry is a test performed to find levels of chemicals produced by the body. The levels aid the veterinarian in diagnosing and treating the horses.
  • Blood gas - A blood gas test measures levels of gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and the blood's pH level. The blood gas is utilized on animals in surgery and animals that are being monitored closely by the veterinarians.

Podiatry Services
Foot care is essential to the overall health and well-being of any equine athlete or companion. At VLAC – Equine Hospital, we strive for open communication and effective partnership between the horse owner, trainer, farrier and veterinarian. Performance and medical issues such as acute or chronic laminitis, caudal heel pain/navicular syndrome, thin soles, white line disease, abscesses, toe/quarter cracks, and flexural or angular limb deformities are all addressed with the utmost attention to your horse’s individual needs. Digital radiographs are essential for accurate assessment of the equine foot, and are recommended for initial evaluation and follow up of progress. Please feel free to call for more information or consultation regarding podiatry cases.

Pre-purchase Exams
Pre-purchase exams are routinely performed by the staff veterinarians at VLAC - Equine Hospital. A thorough soundness and physical exam is complimented by advanced diagnostic equipment. Radiography, ultrasonography, video endoscopy, and complete laboratory services are available upon request. A large number of pre-purchase exams are performed annually for a wide variety of equine disciplines.

Reproduction
Our philosophy at Vermont Large Animal Clinic is to provide high quality individualized care and attention to mares and foals here at our clinic. We feel that this is the best way to maximize reproductive success. Reproductive services are also available on an ambulatory basis for both mares and foals. Please call us with questions regarding your specific needs.

Sports Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging
A major portion of our hospital caseload consists of sports medicine evaluation and therapeutics. Lameness examinations are performed in the field and in the hospital. Our thorough evaluations consist of physical examination, gait analysis in-hand and/or under saddle, flexion tests, diagnostic nerve and joint blocks, and diagnostic imaging. Advances in equine diagnostic imaging permit us to obtain excellent quality digital radiographs and ultrasound images in the hospital and on the farm, allowing for immediate interpretation and treatment recommendations. We are equipped to provide advanced treatments such as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, platelet rich plasma, and IRAP.
