Strangles case

This is the story of Augustine, a 1 year old Spanish Colonial Mustang that presented for a severe case of strangles.

The horse presented to us for purulent nasal discharge, fever, swollen lymphnodes and overall unthriftiness.

The horse was started on IV antibiotics, IV fluids, anti-inflammatories, anti-ulcer medication. Several large abscesses

associated with his lymphnodes were drained. The pictures below illustrate the severity of this case and the several

open wounds that were associated with the draining lymphnodes. Augustine's owner's provided him with all the

necessary care he needed to make a full recovery.

with the retro pharyngeal lymphnodes.

 

 

This is a picture of the jaw showing the draining tracts associated with the

sub mandibular lymphnodes. These areas were drained and lavaged on a

daily basis.

 

The daily routine of scrubbing all the lesions. Augustine was a great

patient and had an obvious desire to live.

 

The following pictures show Augustine several months after he recovered

from his disease. He was able to resume a normal life style and gain weight

again.
